Event: Urban Zen with Kris Carr, Dr. Christianne Northrup, & Dr. Frank Lipman

We are honored to continue our history of sponsoring Donna Karen's Urban Zen!
Last night, the Urban Zen Foundation hosted the second conversation in our Sustainable Wellness Series, this one with a special focus on women’s health and sexuality. Donna Karan welcomed the panel by saying, “We are all patients in this world, and nobody understands this better than the people on this stage,” referring to Dr. Frank Lipman, Dr. Christiane Northrup and Kris Carr.
Donna’s words clearly resonated with the attendees. The room was filled with guests who were eager to learn and participate in such a relevant dialogue – or as Dr. Lipman would say, “a revolutionary dialogue.”
Dr. Lipman began the panel on a surprising note – with dancing. He turned on some of his favorite music and convinced the panelists and the entire room to move their bodies… first moving shoulders, then hips, then shaking out their wrists, then ankles. It was a full on rock-out and shake-down that created an environment of liberation.
After everyone had settled back into their seats, Dr. Lipman launched the conversation saying, “Why sustainable wellness? Because we have a disease care system. We talk about sustainable energy, sustainable agriculture… we need to be talking about sustainable health. We now know that it is never too late. You can start changing your gene expression at a very late age. This is extremely empowering because you have control over your health. Dr. Northrup has been teaching this for years and Kris Carr has been living proof of this for years.”
The discussion amongst the panelists was lively and enthralling. Dr. Northrup and Kris Carr both share a very similar understanding of what it means to be healthy, but arrived at their understanding by taking very different paths. It was fascinating to hear Dr. Northrup share a lifetime of revolutionary thinking and personal insights from her practice. And, it was captivating to hear Kris share her unique, crazy, sexy journey with cancer and her adventures as a “prevention is hot cheerleader.”
Both of the women on the panel spoke from a deep place of knowing. They spoke of how important it is for women to empower themselves, to become the “CEOs of their bodies.” They tackled the topic of fear and how it has permeated the culture of western medicine.
On the subject of fear, Dr. Lipman weighed in saying, “Fear gets so installed in people that it becomes extremely difficult to cut off the line to western medicine. Western medicine is not all bad, but we need to encourage people to take care of their own health. The hardest part of my job is trying to de-brainwash my patients. How do we change the mindset of the culture?”
Dr. Northrup answered by saying, “It’s happening. The culture is changing. I am sitting here with spirit of abundant gratitude because I didn’t think that my work would be accepted in my lifetime. And, look at us! We are having this conversation in Donna Karan’s space. Crazy Sexy Diet is on the New York Times best seller list. As the light get lighter, the dark gets darker. We all have to become media savvy and then we have to make the topic of our health sexy.”
Along with the concept of “sexy health,” the panelists stressed the importance of happiness. Kris spoke about how one of her mantras is, “without your happiness you have nothing.” She said, “Living numb is more of a death than disease. We have to release our happiness. Happiness is the source.”
The whole conversation was one of liberated, joyful, limitless, feminine power. The power of curiosity, of intuitive knowing, of the human body, of happiness.
And, as far as finding the source of sustainable wellness? Perhaps we should look to the words of Dr. Northrup: “A woman understanding how to make herself happy is possibly the greatest source of sustainable wellness on the planet.”
